Nordic Sugar in the final for the E-Prize 2014
Nordic Sugar's factory in Örtofta boasts one of Sweden's smartest and most innovative energy solutions. This was confirmed yet again at the award ceremony for the prestigious E-Prize on 8 October when Nordic Sugar became a respectable second in the category for Large businesses.
Sustainable investments in the future
Sustainable energy solutions form part of Nordic Sugar's long-term strategy to optimise sugar production and to ensure a solid foundation for future sugar supplies in Sweden.
As part of this, the company has invested in two new energy-efficient facilities at the factory in Örtofta. The facilities will reduce the sugar factory's energy consumption by approx. 150,000 MWh annually, corresponding to approx. 30% of the factory's energy needs throughout the production season, at the same time as CO2 emissions are reduced by approx. 32,000 tonnes/year. The reduced energy consumption corresponds to the annual heat consumption of approx. 7,500 single-family homes.
The solutions are a result of a SEK 215 million investment, the largest of its kind in the Swedish sugar industry for 12 years.
Bengt Högberg, Managing Director Nordic Sugar AB:
-We have patiently and for a long time been working to reduce our annual energy consumption and environmental impact. We are therefore greatly honoured to be recognised for our efforts and particularly the great progress we will make this year.
