Production in Porkkala
Porkkala (Kantvik) is the refinery of Sucros OY, in which Nordic Sugar holds an 80 per cent stake, as well as the site of one of Nordic Sugar’s two speciality sugar factories, the sole stand-alone cane sugar refinery in Finland.
The Porkkala refinery produces annually (2014):
- 99,700 tonnes of granulated sugars
- 55,900 tonnes of liquid sugars
- 12,900 tonnes of syrups
- 15,700 tonnes of speciality products
- 2,600 tonnes of food molasses
Boasting a daily refining capacity of around 650 tonnes of raw sugar, the refinery uses both beet and cane as well as industrial grade white beet sugar supplied by the Säkylä sugar factory.
Porkkala refinery produces sugar specialties for a wide range of applications, including confectionary, beverage, jams and marmalades, preserves, bread and cakes. The portfolio also includes speciality sugar products marketed under our well-established Dansukker® brand, such as cube sugar, icing sugar, nib sugars, jam sugar, jelling sugar and syrups.
We manufacture tailor-made sugars for our industrial customers, in close collaboration with the customer. The sugars enable customers to streamline their production process and thus to achieve savings. Bulk and liquid sugars are dispatched daily by truck to customers. In order to ensure that the quality of our products lives up to our own and our customers’ standards at all times, our quality control department conducts approximately 100,000 analyses annually.
The site employs around 180 people. The majority of our employees are engaged in the production e.g. as process operators, power plant operators, machine operators, engineers (mechanics or electricians) and as laboratory technicians. Approximately 40 employees work in the administration and sales & marketing.
Porkkala refinery in Kantvik is located 30 km west of Helsinki. The Porkkala refinery is situated 10 min. drive from the centre of Kirkkonummi, which offers good road and railroad connections.
The factory is situated at the seaside and has its own deep harbour
