Weeds, insects and plant diseases left uncontrolled will reduce yields and deteriorate quality. In a proper growing system, much of the control is done by non-chemical methods. Weeds are kept at bay by means of crop rotation and soil cultivation, and insects and plant diseases are curtailed by their natural enemies such as ladybirds, by crop rotation and resistant varieties. Nordic Sugar demands minimum use of pesticides and sole use of products that are approved by the EU and the country of growing. Beet growers are trained in proper handling of such products.
