Raising the sugar content with molasses

If the sugar content in the forage destined for ensiling falls below 8%, the sugar level can be raised to a more desirable level by adding 30-40 kilos of molasses per tonne of forage. However, this does require that the percentage of dry matter in the ensilage is at least 25%. Otherwise, the molasses will be washed out with press water.

Another advantage of using molasses in ensiling is the stickiness of the molasses, which helps bind the forage in the silo tightly together. This reduces the air available in the silo, raising hygiene and increasing the amount of forage able to be held in the silo
