The Säkylä sugar factory handles Nordic Sugar's beet sugar production in Finland.
During the production season called the campaign and running from end-September to mid-December, the facility operates around the clock, seven days a week. In this period the facility receives and processes almost 600,000 tonnes of sugar beet that is turned into high-quality white granulated sugar and feed products. Around 250 truckloads of beets are delivered to Säkylä every day of the campaign. The sugar beets are supplied by about 900 beet growers by lorry or railroad. The Säkylä sugar factory has a daily processing capacity of 7,500 tonnes of beet.
Annual production in Finland (2014/15):
- 92,000 tonnes of sugar
Beet-based feed products:
- 15,000 tonnes of molasses
The granulated sugar is sold to the food industry in big bags and bulk directly from the site or via Porkkala.
The Säkylä sugar factory employs around 80 people. During the production campaign around 40 seasonal workers also join us. The majority of our employees are engaged in the production as machine operators, process operators and service engineers (within electrical maintenance or automation), as well as at the laboratory. Approximately 12 employees work in administration and the agricultural department.
Staying in top shape
In order to sustain our high level of efficiency at all times, our key activities during the off-season are focused on overhauling and maintaining the production equipment, installing any new facilities as well as on other improvement projects. This is also the time of year when we run further training programmes for our team.
Säkylä is situated by the Pyhäjärvi Lake, 75 km north of Turku. Säkylä offers good road connections in all directions and a railroad network.
